High School

*Disclaimer: This is obviously not the case with everyone. Kindly stfu if this doesn’t seem at all true.

Freshman year:

You go in anxious but determined not to show it and to make people think it’s no big deal to you.  After a few weeks you learn how it works and feel like it’s not all that different from middle school.  A third of the way through the year you’re pretty much established in the high school and routine and are starting to make friends with a few upper classmen.  Three quarters of the way through you can barely remember middle school but at the same time you’re starting to stress about finals coming up soon enough.  At that point you barely remember that you’re the freshman and look forward to having fresh meat in next year.

Sophomore year:

The year starts off easy.  Now that you know what to expect the first few weeks are really fun since there’s not much work yet.  A third of the way through you realize that there isn’t much work at all in comparison to freshman year, or so it seems to you.  This is when you really start to have fun in high school and become more social than ever before.  Two thirds of the way through you realize that you actually need to try more in a few classes that seem to be harder out of nowhere.  You stress for a few weeks getting grades back up but then it’s business as usual.  You are less stressed about finals this year but want to take them seriously so you do at least a little well.  Freshman are no longer “fresh meat” to you and you have friends among them.

Junior year:

You get to school with renewed spirits thinking that this year is going to be the perfect balance between your social and academic life.  Soon into the year you’re told over and over how important the upcoming standardized tests are.  You are a little daunted but don’t want to stress too much about it so tell yourself that it’s not a big deal.  This year seems a little tougher than the rest so far but you can’t figure out why, but it’s nothing you can’t manage.  Once you get settled you end up doing more work than you thought you would and get stressed about not having enough time for other things.  You decide about a third of the way through the year to skip a few homeworks and be social because it seems like everyone else can handle it.  Standardized testing is coming up and you begin to actually stress about it.  Just around that time you realize that you’ve fallen off a lot with work and need to do all of the remaining work and do well on exams.  This creates a high stress environment until the year is over.

Senior year:

It’s finally here.  The easiest year in high school.  You have more time off than any other year and you’re not worried about classes this year.  You see that you have two months before anything major needs to be done with the college admissions process so put most of it off.  A quarter of the way into the year you realize that there’s a lot more to do than you thought.  You still aren’t completely sure where to apply and the apps have a lot more than it seemed on them.  You stress about multiple essays and getting everything you need in on time.  Once this is over it’s a huge relief and you just want to relax while still anxious about where you’re gonna get in.  Half way through the year you aren’t thinking as much about that and get some work done for actual school. It’s not a lot but it’s what you need to do well.  You relax more and start to really enjoy senior year.  This is when the major senioritis comes into play.  Your grades start to drop a bit and your parents tell you that you can’t slack off but you don’t seem to care. You know that your transcript has already been sent to schools without this year and know that all you have to do it pass to keep any acceptances you get.  You start skipping class and having fun in and out of school.  Three quarters of the way through  you start to get letters from colleges telling you if you’ve been accepted or denied.  There is some stress while waiting and joy and disappointment after receiving the letters.  After that’s all done the rest of the year flies by and  you have a lot of fun. Senior year turned out to be really fun with a few major stresses along the way.

Last day of classes. Last time you will see most of the people in your school.  You get sad but have a feeling of peace knowing you’re all moving on.  The summer is a fun time with friends before you or others start to go away.  You have sad goodbyes with close friends and are anxious about starting college yourself.  First day of college.

That awkward moment when you haven’t used your tumblr in a long time and have like twice the followers…

Black Hole Sound Waves

fuckyeahtheuniverse:

Sound waves 57 octaves lower than middle-C are rumbling away from a supermassive black hole in the Perseus cluster.

Astronomers using NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory have found, for the first time, sound waves from a supermassive black hole. The “note” is the deepest ever detected from any object in our Universe. The tremendous amounts of energy carried by these sound waves may solve a longstanding problem in astrophysics.

The black hole resides in the Perseus cluster of galaxies located 250 million light years from Earth. In 2002, astronomers obtained a deep Chandra observation that shows ripples in the gas filling the cluster. These ripples are evidence for sound waves that have traveled hundreds of thousands of light years away from the cluster’s central black hole.

Space is all big and shit, yo. I know most people are already aware of this, but sometimes you just need to put things in perspective.

oh, did you plan on feeling significant today?
